Magnetic Beads for Proteomics

Several formats of magnetic beads are available specifically for applications in proteomics.
Magnetic beads with a hydrophobic surface are well suited for protein and peptide sample concentration, desalting and fractionation, and reducing sample complexity. The surface is coated with C4, C8 or C18 -alkyl groups that bind to the protein/peptide hydrophobic interactions. Each surface is suited for specific purposes:
  • C4 groups - capture, concentration and purification of proteins from general protein mixtures, cell lysates, and culture supernatant; relatively low hydrophobicity
  • C8 groups - capture and purification of peptides and proteins from clinical samples of urine, saliva and CSF; intermediate hydrophobicity
  • C18 groups - desalting of peptides or protein tryptic digest prior to mass spectrometry, concentration of peptides, and the capture and purification of peptides and proteins from serum and plasma; high hydrophobicity


Magnetic beads coated with a weak cation exchange surface and weak anion exchange surface are ideal for reduction of protein or peptide complexity. Applications include sample preparation and prefractionation prior to mass spectrometry or SDS-PAGE analysis, biomarker analysis and serum/plasma profiling. These beads are counters to one another and it is recommended that the user test both types to determine which is the best fit for the application.
